In Defence of Blogging

computer_nerdSome legitimate questions were asked in the comments on my first posting ‘My Entry Into Blogging World’. The main ones were to do with the amount of time taken and whether there was not some egotism involved in wanting to share your daily thoughts with the world! These are valid questions which I had thought myself when I first heard of blogs. However I am now converted and I thought I’d share my reasons why. Here goes:

  1. I have frequently wanted to get into the habit of writing down my reflections (on books read, bible insights, observations on the world etc.) and have a way of being able to draw on them for various teachings etc The blog disciplines me to do that and there is an accountability because you know that some people will want to read it on a regular basis.
  2. I have long believed that the art of conversation is a lost art. Too much talk even between Christians is trivial and superficial. Virtual conversation can never replace the real thing but there is at least an exchange of ideas and thoughts on significant things between people.
  3. I supose for many people it as valid a hobby and leisure activity as any other. It’s fun!
  4. I hope others of us are also not being too arrogant to supose that as servants of God we may have something to say to the wider body of Christ and to those who are not Christians. I have only been blogging a week and already those opportunities are emerging.
  5. There is a lot of rubbish and trivia on the net. Why not sow some good seed into the world of cyberspace?

    Well said, Trevor!

It also takes courage to put your name to something that the whole world can see, and potentially take a pot-shot at. What impresses me about almost all of the Christian blogs I have seen, is that while the majority of non-Christian bloggers hide behind pseudonyms, so they have a defense against any backlash to what they write, Christian bloggers are not ashamed to say, “This is me, and this is what I believe.”

The points you have made are very valid. Especially (to my mind) 4 and 5. We have a message we are commissioned to take to the ends of the earth, and we have a medium that can reach the ends of the earth with ease… I’m sure the Apostle Paul, would have pounced on such an opportunity (”by all means”)… and so should we!

I’m enjoying your blog, Trevor. Keep up the good work.

Blogging is an interesting phenomenon… some blogs are almost a bit creepy when people are sharing their every thought and movement with the world, but when a blog has a clear purpose and is written by someone who has good stuff to say and people that want to hear it then it is a fantastic platform for it.

I’ve been really blessed by your blog already as well as Roger’s and Chris HH’s, I believe for people like you the time you spend on it is a worthwhile and valuable investment into the kingdom.

I can see why people would think that we have EGO’S as big as our RAM, but they’re all wrong, I AM RIGHT AND I WILL NOT BE TOLD OTHERWISE!!! sheesh, that was the flesh….get away…ow….
what do you think about Israel?…..ahhhhhhh……help…..I’ve fallen over and I can’t get up.

    too random?
    Peace,
    Joe…
