An Interesting Quote

For those who were following the mild debate on Law here just a couple of weeks ago, it may interest you to know that I have begun doing some fresh study on this subject - the results of which I hope to post before too long! But I thought any who objected to my use of the word ‘inadequate’ for the Law, may be interested in something I read from Fee and Stuart (in How to Read the Bible for All its Worth - a useful little book that I would recommend):

In terms of its ability to provide eternal life and true righteousness before God, the Law was quite inadequate. It was not designed for such purposes (p.161)

This does not prove my point of course because they could be wrong; but it is at least encouraging to know that I am not a complete heretic if such respectable evangelical scholars are making the same point!!

The law isn’t inadequate in so far as it does what it was made to do, that is make us more aware of our sin and in turn more aware of our need for a Saviour. But as for providing eternal life and righteousness before God then certainly it’s inadequate!

“Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” (Romans 4:19-20)
