Reading Andrew Murray
For my devotional reading recently I have taken up a book by an author whose books I used to read a number of years ago. Most famous for With Christ in the School of Prayer, Andrew Murray was a preacher, pastor and writer in South Africa at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. He came from a tradition sometimes kknown as the ‘holiness movement,’ a proponent of the original ‘Keswick’ teaching on the ‘deeper life.’ As with all traditions this teaching was open to distortions but for me Murray represents some of the best of it, with a genuine love for God and longing to know more of him, and insights into life in the Spirit. He experienced revival while minsitering in South Africa. The book I’m reading at the moment is called Power for Your Life and I’m finding some helpful insights. I hope to post some of them from time to time. Another short piece about him can be found here.

I love some of Andrew Murray’s material - his books are absolutely full of insight and revelation. Certainly there was no question that he had really pressed in to ‘the deeper life’ and had a firm grasp of true spirituality. One of my favourite titles is ‘Working for God’. I’m not sure if there is any current author that has such a strong grasp of truth as well as an ability to write such devotional and inspirational material.

I love George Muller!
His stuff has impacted me in such a deep way, I don’t think I even understand it. I have read most of his books and have been so encouraged by his personal walk with Jesus. He was something special.
I am a musician and GM has inspired many of my songs. I would be honored if you would check out my music on my site. All my music is free for download. Anyway, I just thought that I’d share.
Thanks,
-Sean

Hugh, I agree with you; Andrew Murray is really deep and have benefited much from reading him. I’m currently reading “Andrew Murray on Prayer”-Whitaker House, which is a compilation of several of his books. In the same vein, may I suggest “Freedom From a Self-Centered Life/Dying to Self” by William Law, and “The Power of the Spirit” by the same author.
