About Me
Biography
I was born in 1966 and brought up in the Wirral, in the North West of England, UK.
I made the best decision of my life at the age of 18, on 1st December 1984, when I committed myself to follow Jesus Christ for the rest of my life. It has been and continues to be a challenging but wonderful life!
Soon after, I studied for my degrees in English literature and a teaching quailifcation in Lancaster, UK, where I also made the second best decision of my life - I asked Alison to marry me. After three attempts she said yes (!), and we have been married since 1989. She is the most amazing lady I know!
We have four wonderful kids - Samuel (in 1992), Bethany (1994), Anna (1995) and Abigail (1997). They have kept us busy and tired, but also happy and stimulated! Somehow, I found time to teach in secondary schools for a number of years and am now the lead elder (pastor) at Community Church Huddersfield, a church I have been leading since 1998. I have been in Christian leadership since 1994. Alison is a full-time and very busy wife and mother, a part-time supply teacher and a zealous church youth leader!
Calling
My main calling and passion is to help God’ s people grow to maturity, through preaching, teaching and discipling, so that I can contribute to seeing the church being built up as the true and full expression of Christ in the earth. I feelI can echo the words of the apostle Paul who said: We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. (Col.1:28)
I also have a passion to relate the truth of the Word of God to the issues of our world, firmly convinced that the message of the Kingdom of God is the only hope for our messed up world. I lecture for the Covenant School of Ministries, in their School of the Word programme, on the subject of ‘Understanding Our World.’
These schools are part of the work of Ministries Without Borders, a partnership of churches and ministries under the leadership of Keri Jones. I have been a part of churches working with Keri, and his brother (the late Bryn Jones) for most of my Christian life, and I am privleged to serve with Keri and other partners working with him still.
Interests
I keep telling myself I really ought to get more interests! Though how I would fit them in, I don’t know. My main interest is reading - especially history, current affairs and Literature (particularly poetry and the traditional great writers). My favourite writer is Dickens. My favourite poets are Wordsworth, Robert Frost and R.S.Thomas - it’s a bit worrying that they tend to be the miserable, melancholic ones!!
When I make myself get round to it, I really enjoy walking in the hills - and there are plenty of dark
and dismal moors in West Yorkshire to enjoy!! I also used to enjoy sketching but haven’t done any for years. If this gives any insight into my character and anyone can suggest any suitable extra interests I should try, please feel free to suggest some! I suppose I can now add blogging to my list!
